Choose your Council or Board

Which Council or Board are you facing?

Every course is written to evidence insight, reflection and remediation, whether you are facing a notification, a competence review, a Professional Conduct Committee or the Tribunal. Each page sets those courses against the concerns your own authority raises and the standards it applies. Pick yours, then choose your five or ten.

How it works

From letter to evidence, in four steps

1Read what you have been sent

Identify which body is writing to you and at which stage — your Council or Board and its Registrar, a competence review, a Professional Conduct Committee, or the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. Your profession’s page sets out who decides, and what each stage is for.

2Choose your ten

Pick the courses that match the concerns actually named in the letter, rather than the ones that look most general. Add a live course if you want a facilitated session.

3Work through them at your own pace

Access is immediate. Each course issues a dated CPD certificate on completion, issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses.

4Write your own reflection

The certificates evidence that you acted and when. The reflection has to be yours, in your own words, and that is what carries weight with a Council, a committee or the Tribunal.

Why ten

Why practitioners take a set rather than a single course

Every Council and Board under the Act weighs the same three things, and a single course rarely evidences all of them.

Insight, reflection and remediation are separate

Insight is understanding what happened and its effect. Reflection is setting that down in your own words. Remediation is what you changed, evidenced. A committee or Tribunal that finds one without the others usually says so.

Letters name more than one concern

A single notification often raises honesty, boundaries and record-keeping together. Five or ten courses let you answer each strand rather than the loudest one.

Dates matter as much as content

Every certificate carries a date. Acting early, while a matter is still with the Registrar or a committee, is visible in a way that acting late is not — and many matters are decided at the written stage.

It is cheaper as a set

At NZ$200 a course, ten bought singly cost NZ$2,000. The set exists so that cost is not the reason a strand goes unanswered.

Written for your Council or Board

Your profession’s courses are set out against the code or standards and the concerns your own authority actually applies. The five or ten you choose speak to the letter you received, not to remediation in general.

What a course cannot do

No course decides a matter, and no provider can promise an outcome. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not worth buying from.

Buying for a team or organisation?

Licences, member discounts and live team training

The Bulk Buy Offer is for one practitioner. If you need places for colleagues, blocks of seats and member discounts are quoted separately, and the four live courses can be run for your whole team via Zoom.

Key terms

What your Council or Board means by these words

Fitness to practise

The phrase practitioners use for having the competence, conduct and health to practise safely — the purpose of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. In the Act itself it is narrower: the health route (ss 45–51) and the test for registration and a practising certificate (s 16); competence and conduct are handled separately. A Council or Board acts on a notification when any of the three may be in question, and it is a judgement about current and future safety, not only about what happened.

Insight

Understanding what went wrong, why it happened, and the effect it had on the patient and their whānau, on colleagues and on public confidence in the profession. Insight is weighed at almost every stage, whatever the concern, and it is the element often described as lacking.

Reflection

Setting that understanding down honestly and in your own words, including what you would do differently and what you have already changed. Reflection is the written record of insight, which is why the two are so often confused.

Remediation

The concrete steps taken so that the same thing does not happen again — training, supervision, changes to how you work — together with evidence that they happened. Insight without remediation is an account; remediation without insight is a certificate.

These descriptions are our summary of how the terms are used in New Zealand regulatory practice. They are not quotations from any Council, Board or the Tribunal, and they are not legal advice. Your indemnity insurer, union or lawyer should advise on your own matter.

Official guidance

Read your own Council or Board, first and last

Nothing here replaces what your authority publishes about its own process. These are the pages worth reading before you write anything.

Healthcare Ethics New Zealand is an independent provider of remediation courses. We are not affiliated with, accredited by, or endorsed by any responsible authority under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 or by the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. FAQs

Bulk Buy Offer: frequently asked questions

What is included in the Bulk Buy Offer?

Any five of the online courses on your Council’s or Board’s page for NZ$850, or any ten for NZ$1,400, chosen by you. Each carries 2 CPD hours and issues its own certificate on completion, issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses, so five courses give you 10 CPD hours and five dated certificates, ten give you 20 and ten. Five bought singly would be NZ$1,000: the five-course bundle takes 15 per cent off. Ten bought singly would be NZ$2,000: the ten-course bundle is ten for the price of seven, a saving of NZ$600.

Can I buy five courses instead of ten?

Yes. On your Council’s or Board’s page choose Any 5 at the top of the course list: any five courses for NZ$850, 15 per cent off the single-course price, chosen by you with a certificate for each. The ten-course bundle is NZ$1,400, 30 per cent off, and is the only bundle a face-to-face course can be added to. Both are for one practitioner.

What does the NZ$2,400 option add?

One of the four face-to-face courses, conducted live via video link on Zoom, on top of your ten online courses (the ten-course bundle only; it cannot be added to the five): Probity and Ethics; Ethics and Professionalism; Professional Boundaries; or the Reflection Workshop — Insight, Reflect, Remediate. The live course is NZ$1,000 inside the bundle against NZ$1,200 on its own, carrying 5 CPD hours, and it runs on one published date. It is one live course plus ten online courses, not a bundle of live courses.

Which courses can I choose my five or ten from?

From the 24 courses on your own profession’s page. Pick your Council or Board below, then choose your five or ten from the courses set out there; each bulk buy is bought through a single page. Many people facing a notification start with the nine-course Core Remediation Set — insight, reflection, remediation, ensuring no repeat, the process, and the Ethics and Professionalism pair written for their profession — and add one course that matches the specific concern raised.

Which Councils and Boards do the courses cover?

All 18 responsible authorities under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. Ten professions have a page of their own — doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and optometrists and dispensing opticians — and every other practitioner, from Chinese medicine practitioners and paramedics to psychotherapists, buys through the All Health Practitioners page.

Do I get a certificate for every course?

Yes. Each completed course issues its own CPD certificate, issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses, recording the course title, 2 CPD hours and the date of completion — which is what makes it usable as evidence in a remediation plan, a written response to your Council or Board, or a submission to a Professional Conduct Committee or the Tribunal.

How long do I have to use them?

Each course runs for twelve months from the date of purchase. Inside those twelve months you can return to a course as often as you like, including after you have completed it and downloaded the certificate, at no further cost. A certificate records the date you completed the course, and that date does not change; a course bought again within twelve months is half price.

Do the hours count towards my recertification?

That is for your own recertification programme to say, and the answer differs by authority: some count hours (the Nursing Council, the Physiotherapy Board, the Chiropractic Board, the Osteopathic Council), some ask for a plan, activities and written reflection with no hours (the Dental Council, the Pharmacy Council, the Psychologists Board), and the ODOB requires Board-accredited activities for its Ethical conduct and Cultural safety credits, which these courses are not. The courses are written to each authority’s standards but are not accredited or endorsed by any of them; keep each certificate with your own written reflection.

Will completing five or ten courses decide my matter?

No. No course decides a notification, a competence review, a Professional Conduct Committee investigation or a Tribunal hearing, and no provider can promise an outcome. What a dated certificate evidences is that you identified the concern and acted on it, and when. The reflection you write alongside it is what carries the weight.

Is the bundle available to organisations?

The Bulk Buy Offer is for individual purchasers. Organisations buying for their people are covered by course licences or a member discount scheme, quoted separately, and the four live courses can be run for a whole team — see Face-to-Face Team Training.

Is what I do confidential?

Yes. A course you buy yourself is entirely confidential. We never tell a Council or Board, a Professional Conduct Committee, the Tribunal, an employer, a union or an indemnity provider that you are a customer. Your certificate is yours, and you decide whether to show it to anyone.
