How it works

From enquiry to certificates

There are no published dates on this page because sessions are arranged around your team.

Tell us what you need

Which course, roughly how many people, and the standards or incidents you want it to speak to. One email is usually enough to start.

We agree a date and timings

Sessions are arranged around your roster rather than a fixed calendar, which is why no dates are published here.

We deliver it live

Facilitated via video link on Zoom, interactive throughout, with discussion of real situations rather than a recorded module.

Everyone gets a certificate

A 5 CPD hour certificate for each person who completes, issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses and emailed afterwards.

In short

What is this training?

Four live, facilitated courses in probity, ethics, professionalism, professional boundaries and reflective practice, delivered to your team as a group via video link on Zoom, with a certificate issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses for every person who completes. Each is a live, facilitated session carrying 5 CPD hours.

They are designed to do two things: help your team review what their own Council or Board expects of them in day-to-day practice, and help the organisation show that its people are held to those standards. The sessions are open to healthcare practitioners whether or not they are registered, so a whole team can sit together. Content is shaped around the standards you want covered, and sessions are arranged around your roster rather than a published calendar — which is why dates and prices are quoted rather than listed.

No New Zealand Council or Board approves courses from any provider, and no course guarantees an outcome in an individual case. What a live session gives you that an e-learning module does not is discussion — staff working through real situations with a facilitator and with each other.

Key terms

What the Councils and Boards mean by insight, reflection and remediation

Four terms recur throughout correspondence from a Council, a Board or a Professional Conduct Committee, and the sessions are built around them. Staff who understand the difference respond better when something goes wrong, which is most of the reason to run this training before it does.

Fitness to practise

Having the skills, knowledge, character and health to practise your profession safely and effectively. A Council or Board acts on a notification or complaint when a concern suggests that one of those may be in question, and the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 gives it the powers to do so. It is a judgement about current and future safety, not only about what happened.

Insight

Understanding what went wrong, why it happened, and the effect it had on patients, colleagues and public confidence in the profession. Insight is weighed at almost every stage, whatever the concern, and it is the element often described as lacking.

Reflection

Setting that understanding down honestly and in your own words, including what you would do differently and what you have already changed. Reflection is the written record of insight, which is why the two are so often confused.

Remediation

The concrete steps taken so that the same thing does not happen again — training, supervision, changes to how you work — together with evidence that they happened. Insight without remediation is an account; remediation without insight is a certificate.

Who we work with

Healthcare organisations of any size

Mixed groups work well: the material is written around the standards the Councils and Boards share, so doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, pharmacists and allied health practitioners can sit in the same session — and so can colleagues who are not registered with any authority.

  • Health New Zealand — Te Whatu Ora districts and public hospitals
  • Private hospitals and specialist clinics
  • Primary health organisations and general practices
  • Dental practices and dental groups
  • Community pharmacy groups
  • Aged residential care and disability providers
  • Allied health practices
  • Universities, polytechnics and training bodies
  • Locum and recruitment agencies

Questions organisations ask us

Frequently asked questions

What does a course cost for an organisation?

Team training is quoted rather than listed, because the price depends on the course, the number of people and the timings you need. Tell us what you are looking for and we will come back with a figure. For comparison, the same courses run for individuals on published dates at NZ$1,200 a person.

How are the courses delivered?

Live via video link on Zoom, facilitated, and interactive throughout. They are not recorded modules: staff discuss real situations with the facilitator and with each other, which is what makes the reflection work.

How long does a session take?

Each course carries 5 CPD hours. The exact start and finish times are agreed with you, so a session can be arranged around a roster, a study day or a training afternoon.

Do our staff get certificates?

Yes. Everyone who completes receives a 5 CPD hour certificate issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses, on completion and emailed afterwards. Staff can put it straight into a CPD portfolio or a performance-development record.

Which Councils and Boards do the courses cover?

All 18 responsible authorities under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. The material is written around the standards the Councils and Boards share — honesty, professional boundaries, communication, record keeping, and the duty to reflect and remediate — and around the codes each publishes for its own profession, so a mixed group works well. If your team sits under one authority, we can weight the session to that Council’s or Board’s code. Colleagues who are not registered with any authority can attend alongside them.

Can the content be tailored to us?

Yes. The content lists on this page are indicative. Sessions are shaped around the standards you want covered and, where you want it, around the kinds of incident your organisation has actually seen — discussed in general terms, never as a named case.

Is this only for staff who are already in trouble?

No, and most organisational bookings are not. A common reason to run one of these is preventive: making sure your team understands what their Council or Board expects before anything goes wrong. It is also used after an incident, to help a team work through what happened and what changes.

One of our staff needs this individually. Can they book alone?

Yes. The same four courses run on published dates for individuals, live via Zoom, at NZ$1,200 a course, and any of them can be taken one to one for NZ$600 more. See the face-to-face courses page.

Can we buy the online courses for a team instead?

Yes. Blocks of seats in the online catalogue can be assigned to named people, and a discounted route exists for the members of a body that represents them. See Course Licences & Member Access. An individual can also buy any five or any ten online courses through the Bulk Buy Offer.

Does a Council or Board approve this training?

No New Zealand Council or Board accredits, approves or endorses courses from any provider, and no course guarantees an outcome in an individual case. What the training gives an organisation is a facilitated session on the standards its staff are actually held to, and a dated certificate for each person who completes it.
